Gortsarar Aliq

Logo of Gortsarar Aliq

Gortsarar Aliq (Business Channel) positions itself as "the first and only private socio-political radio station" in Armenia. To distinguish itself from music-focused radio stations, it has adopted the slogan "No Time for Singing," emphasizing its dedication to socio-political and informational content rather than entertainment. The station broadcasts in various formats, offering news coverage, analysis, interviews, and discussions on current affairs.

The media outlet was founded in 2011 by journalist Koryun Khumaryan under the name "Lratvakan Radio" (News Radio). The station broadcasts in Armenia's capital, Yerevan, on FM 106.5. In addition to radio broadcasts, Gortsarar Aliq publishes its content in video format on its YouTube channel.

Until October 2023, the station operated as "Lratvakan Radio," focusing primarily on political topics. Following a rebranding to "Gortsarar Aliq," the editorial focus shifted toward economic and business themes. The original "Lratvakan Radio" YouTube channel and website (lratvakan.am) continue to operate, featuring political programs, while other content is published on the new "Gortsarar Aliq" YouTube channel. Both political and economic programs are broadcast on the FM 106.5 frequency.

The broadcasting license is held by Impulse LLC, which is 100% owned by Alla Abovyan, wife of the company and radio station founder Koryun Khumaryan. Since 2020, their younger son Davit Khumaryan has served as director of Impulse LLC. The radio station's chief editor is Lianna Khachatryan, wife of the Khumaryans' elder son, Garegin.

Facts

Founding Year2011
Founder
  • Koryun Khumaryan

Koryun Khumaryan founded both the "Impulse-Mayak" radio station and "Lratvakan Radio" (later rebranded as "Gortsarar Aliq").

Born in 1941 in Satkha village, Javakhk (Georgia), Khumaryan was an Armenian journalist and media professional. From 1967, his career was closely tied to Armenia's radio broadcasting sector. He worked at the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of the USSR (Gosteleradio), served as the exclusive correspondent for Russia's "Mayak" radio station in Armenia, held significant positions at Armenian Radio, and for many years managed the "Impulse" radio station, which he founded in 1999.

Prior to founding Impulse, Russia's "Mayak" radio station was rebroadcast in Armenia. After it was closed by state authorities, Khumaryan continued broadcasting it privately under the name "Impulse-Mayak."

Khumaryan was a member of the Journalists' Union of Armenia from 1971. He passed away on October 1, 2021.

CEO
  • Davit Khumaryan

Davit Khumaryan is the younger son of Impulse LLC founder Koryun Khumaryan. He studied journalism at the Armenian-Russian University and worked for nine months on the "Armenian Export Catalog" project outside of journalism.

According to the State Register of Legal Entities, he succeeded his father as executive director of Impulse LLC in 2020. He has no prior experience working for other media outlets.

On "Gortsarar Aliq," Khumaryan co-hosts "Darbinyan's Hour" with former Armenian Prime Minister Armen Darbinyan, covering past, present, and future global events from an Armenian perspective.

Editor-In-Chief
  • Lianna Khachatryan

Lianna Khachatryan has served as editor-in-chief of "Gortsarar Aliq" since 2023. She joined Lratvakan Radio (later Gortsarar Aliq) in 2011.

She is the daughter-in-law of founder Koryun Khumaryan, married to his eldest son, Garegin Khumaryan. Her work focuses on regional politics and issues, and science development in Armenia. She holds a second qualification as a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, with interest in the psychological dimensions of politics.

Other Important People
  • Garegin Khumaryan

Garegin Khumaryan previously served as Program Director for "Gortsarar Aliq" (then "Lratvakan Radio"). He is the eldest son of founder Koryun Khumaryan and brother of current Impulse LLC Director Davit Khumaryan.

From 2019 to April 2024, he served as Director of Public Radio of Armenia. On January 31, 2024, Public Radio's "Security Environment" program hosted Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. On February 5, Khumaryan published an article on Public Radio's website apologizing for the program's quality and expressing disagreement with some of the Prime Minister's statements. He also criticized the interviewer's performance.

On February 6, the Council of Public Broadcaster issued a statement asserting that Khumaryan had "prima facie abused his authority and official position" by using Public Radio's website to present personal opinions. The Ethics Monitoring Body, responding to the Council's application, analyzed Khumaryan's article and found no violations of journalistic ethics norms.

Relations between Khumaryan and the Council became strained following this incident. His term expired on April 12, 2024. He participated in the competition for reappointment. After no candidates were selected in the first round, the Council appointed Armen Koloyan as Director in the second competition.

Khumaryan has legally challenged the Council's decisions regarding Koloyan's selection and appointment.
