Media Ownership

The Media Ownership Monitor Armenia examined ownership structures of 39 companies and 48 owners that control 42 of the most influential media outlets in the country. The Companies database provides profiles of 39 companies, including operating companies directly behind media outlets and parent organizations that control multiple media entities. The Individual Owners database features 47 entries representing the people and entities that ultimately control Armenia's influential media. Information was primarily derived from the State Register of Legal Entities and the State Register of Beneficial Owners.

The research reveals diverse ownership patterns, from family-controlled businesses to politically affiliated enterprises, reflecting the complex interconnections between media, business, and politics in Armenia. The Individual Owners database includes not only natural persons but also institutional owners: the Republic of Armenia (through state-owned media), the Russian Federation, the United States Agency for Global Media, and a political party. This diversity of ownership types demonstrates that media control in Armenia extends beyond individual businesspeople to include state actors, foreign governments, international agencies, and political organizations.

Understanding these ownership structures is essential for assessing potential influences on editorial independence. Family ownership concentrations, political affiliations of media owners, and state involvement all create different dynamics that may affect how news is reported and which perspectives receive prominence. By documenting these relationships transparently, the databases enable citizens, journalists, and policymakers to evaluate the forces shaping Armenia's information environment.
