Owners Database
Research by Media Ownership Monitor Armenia identified 48 owners who control 42 of the country's most influential media outlets. The Individual Owners database profiles these individuals and entities that ultimately exercise control over Armenia's media landscape. Alongside natural persons—businesspeople, entrepreneurs, and media professionals—this database includes institutional owners: the Republic of Armenia (through state-owned media), the Russian Federation, the United States Agency for Global Media, and a political party. This diversity demonstrates that media ownership in Armenia encompasses individual proprietors, state actors, foreign governments, international agencies, and political organizations. Information was primarily derived from the State Register of Legal Entities, beneficial ownership declarations, court documents, and public records.
The profiles reveal significant patterns in Armenia's media ownership landscape. Several media outlets are controlled by family networks, with ownership stakes distributed among relatives and business partners. Many individual owners maintain close connections to political figures or have themselves held government positions, raising questions about potential influence on editorial independence. Some owners face criminal charges or legal proceedings, while others operate media alongside diverse business interests in telecommunications, construction, real estate, and other sectors. These interconnections between media ownership, politics, and business create a complex web of potential influences on the information environment.
Each individual profile documents ownership stakes, biographical background, political affiliations, business interests beyond media, and legal issues where relevant. The database provides transparency about who controls Armenia's most influential media outlets, enabling citizens to understand the personal, political, and economic interests that may shape editorial decisions. By revealing these connections, the database supports informed media consumption and contributes to accountability in Armenia's media sector.
