  • Levon Ter-Petrosyan
Levon Ter-Petrosyan was the first President of Armenia, and his press secretary from 1992 to 1994 was Aram Abrahamyan. Ter-Petrosyan is an orientalist, philologist, historian, and holds a Doctorate in Philological Sciences. He was born on January 9, 1945, in Aleppo, Syria, and repatriated to Armenia with his family in 1946. His political activism began in the 1960s during his student years, but his large-scale political career is linked to the Karabakh Movement in 1988. He became one of the leaders of the "Karabakh" committee, which organized mass rallies and protests in support of the right to self-determination for the people of Artsakh. For his involvement, Levon Ter-Petrosyan was arrested and imprisoned in December 1988 and released in May 1989. In 1990, Ter-Petrosyan was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Armenia, a position that effectively made him the leader of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Under his leadership, Armenia held a referendum on declaring independence, which resulted in Armenia leaving the USSR on September 21, 1991. In the presidential elections held that same October, he became the first president of independent Armenia. His presidency (1991-1998) coincided with the Nagorno-Karabakh War, the economic crisis following the collapse of the USSR, and a blockade. Due to internal political disagreements over the resolution of the Karabakh conflict, Ter-Petrosyan resigned as president on February 3, 1998. After his resignation, Ter-Petrosyan temporarily withdrew from politics to focus on academic and journalistic activities. He returned to politics for the 2008 presidential elections and later founded the Armenian National Congress party, which became one of Armenia's most influential opposition forces.
